Science
Subject Intent
At St Paul’s C of E Primary School, our science teaching aims to foster and develop our pupils' natural curiosity by providing a range of opportunities to build on their working scientifically skills. Science lessons provide our pupils with the skills to question and discuss science based issues that may affect their own lives, the direction of society and the future of the world.
As part of our curriculum, we aim to provide all pupils with the opportunity to immerse themselves in enquiries related to both their own experiences and the wider world and ensure that they have the opportunity to carry out physical investigations to test predictions and deepen their understanding.
Our curriculum is planned carefully with our pupils in mind. Scientists studied are chosen carefully to reflect a range of periods of history along with a diverse representation of cultures. Opportunities are sought by our staff to offer enriching experiences, such as inviting local specialists into school to lead sessions; KS2 pupils attending science experience days at the local secondary schools and use of visits to places such as the Science Museum and workshops at Chessington World of Adventures. Access to remote sessions, such as online workshops with WWF or Q&A sessions with specialists, are also used to deepen understanding and engage pupils further in their learning.
Our staff ensure that all pupils are exposed to a full range of scientific vocabulary and experiences that allow them to become confident in articulating and expressing their own ideas. By Year 6, our pupils will be able to effectively communicate their scientific thinking, choosing vocabulary carefully to support this, as well as critically evaluate concepts presented to them.
