Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Subject Intent

At St Paul's C of E Primary School, we aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the school and wider community. We also aim to provide pupils with a clear understanding of what a positive relationship looks like and how these can be developed through Relationships Education (RSE). RSE is about understanding the importance of family life, stable and loving relationships and respect for others, love and kindness. At St Paul's we take care to ensure there is no stigmatism of any child based on their home circumstances and we do not use RSE as a means of promoting any form of sexual orientation. Our teaching is underpinned by the message that we are all 'made in God's image' and RSE lessons focus on informing about the world around us.

Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so, they learn to recognise their own value, work collaboratively and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Our pupils learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences, so that they can go on to form effective and fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Please note: Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of the sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE. We encourage parents to approach the school to discuss this if it is something that they are considering to gain clarity around what their child can/cannot be withdrawn from.

We lead an annual information meeting for parents about our RSE curriculum prior to each year group beginning their lessons to explain this further too - look out for dates on our school diary here.
