PE
Subject Intent
At St Paul's C of E Primary School, our aim is to provide a PE curriculum which allows pupils to develop the skills and confidence to succeed in physical activities and to try new things. We take pride in providing opportunities for children to compete in sport which helps to embed values such as: collaboration, respect and good sportsmanship, in addition to fostering aspirations. We look for opportunities for our pupils to support within our school community, taking on the role of 'Sports Leaders' by leading activities on sports day or supporting with play during break and lunchtimes as a Prefect.
We deliver our PE curriculum through use of a combination of sports coaching and delivery by our class teachers. We invest in regular CPD for our staff (using the PE & Sport Premium) and look for opportunities to enrich the curriculum through use of short courses, such as a set of hockey sessions delivered by a specialist coach. We make links with local sports clubs, such as Surbiton Tennis Club, and find opportunities to motivate the pupils with longer-term goals, such as working towards a cumulatuve half-marathon within our running club.
We place a heavy emphasis on the link between physical fitness and positive mental health. We encourage our staff and pupils to take part in the Daily Mile regularly to develop fitness and stamina, but also to provide a space to be quiet and reflect during the day. We look for opportunities for the whole school community (including parents) to engage in physical activities together, such as Wake and Shake, to support our pupils further in developing a positive attitude towards physical activity which will support them in leading a healthy lifestyle as they grow older.
By the end of their time with us, it is our intention that all pupils will be equipped to be physically fit, to have a strong awareness of how to keep themselves safe and healthy, and to be effective communicators and leaders within teams. Developing each of these things will support them in being prepared for their transition to secondary school.
