St Paul's Newsletter
Friday 24th November 2023
Message from Mrs Evans
We have had an exciting few weeks at St Paul's as plans for our school Christmas celebrations are really beginning to take shape. It has been lovely to watch the class Christmas hoops being created and to hear the singing practice for the concert and Nativity.
I have had the pleasure of completing the last few tours for prospective parents for Reception September 2024; it has been wonderful to have so many new families visiting us and fantastic to hear the positive things that have been shared about the school by our families - thank you!
We had a visit from our new School Improvement Partner and spent time in the classrooms observing the maths teaching - it was lovely to have so many things to celebrate in what we saw. Our staff make this such a positive and productive environment for our pupils.
We have had a fabulous 'Christmas Comes Early' day and are really looking forward to seeing many of you at the Christmas Extravaganza tomorrow!
I hope that our families like the new format of the newsletter - please do give us your feedback. We hope that this will make it more accessible for parents and carers and encourage all families to use the newsletter and website as a hub for information about current end upcoming events. Please do let us know if there is any information that you are looking for that you cannot easily locate.
It was lovely to see so many families at parent/carer meetings last night and we look forward to welcoming others next week.
Finally, following our meeting on Wednesday, I would like to say a huge thank you to our Class Reps. They do a fabulous job in supporting our community!

Class News
Reception
This week in Reception, we have been writing our letters to Santa ready for our trip to the post box next week. In our creative corner we have been looking through catalogues of toys, cutting and sticking and making a list of ideas of presents that we might like. In Maths this week, we have been looking at repeating patterns, finishing the patterns on the jellyfishes' tentacles. We have also used our fine motor skills to drive cars around different tracks.
Reception Newsletter
Year 1
In Year 1 we have been looking at numbers to 20 and working out different ways to add them. We have been solving a mixture of problems using our number bonds to 10 and solving missing number additions. In Geography, we have continued looking at people and communities around the world, focusing on how houses are different across the continents. We drew on our Science learning about materials to help us to compare. In English, we have been exploring writing letters, looking at the features of letters and why they are written.

Year 2
Year 2 have been working particularly hard on our handwriting. We have been trying very hard to make sure that all of our letters sit on the line and that capital letters are taller than other letters. We have explored adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers using different resources such as: 100 squares and dienes (we call them sticks and stones). We discussed our preferred strategy and at the end of a lesson many of us explained that we preferred using the dienes because this helped us to see the tens and ones to add or subtract easily. We have enjoyed learning about food groups using the Eatwell guide and have designed a healthy meal with food from different food groups in Science. We also learnt about food groups from Year 6 in our recent trip to the library and had a really exciting trip to the King's Centre this week too for the Christmas Journey!
Year 2 Newsletter
Year 3
In Year 3 this week in Maths, we have been using our resources to solve questions about amounts of money. In English, we have started our new book called "Don't Eat the Teacher" by Nick Ward. This story is inspiring our own writing. We are aiming to include conjunctions and powerful adverbs while writing in the present progressive tense. In Science, we are continuing with our topic focusing on 'Forces'. We have completed an investigation into magnetism and discovered what in our classroom attracts magnets.
Year 3 Newsletter
Year 4
This week, Year 4 have been continuing our learning focused on the Romans. We looked at what life was like for a Roman soldier at Hadrian's wall and wrote diary entries to show what we had learnt. We looked at lots of primary sources, including the Vindolanda tablets, which are real letters that Roman soldiers sent to their families. Did you know that lots of Romans complained about the cold weather in Britain? In PE, we have been learning about Boxercise. We have had fun learning different boxing movements and putting them together to create different combinations.
Year 4 Newsletter
Year 5
In Year 5, we have been focsuing on angles - practising measuring and drawing these with a protractor. Louis Sachar’s "Holes" continues to provide a great hook for our writing work. We have finished our setting descriptions and have now begun work on writing our own narratives set within the Holes universe. Finally, in PE we have been developing the keys skills associated with playing cricket, including: teamwork, resilience and coordination.

Year 6
Year 6 have been working hard on their division skills and how to apply them in a wide range of scenarios. We've started to focus on how we can use division facts for finding fractions of amounts. We've explored how using pictorial representations with bar models can help us to find missing information too. In our Science, we've continued to explore an array of circuits with Mrs Velzeboer and we've been investigating how changing the number of cells (batteries) affects the brightness of the bulbs. We were really scientific and started to hypothesise how the movement of electrons could be affected by the number of cells. We are looking forward to applying our science circuit knowledge to create alarm systems in DT.

Holidays in Term Time
We would like to remind all parents that holidays during term time will be recorded as an unauthorised absence. Families may be asked to meet with Mrs Evans before their form is signed and/or may receive a letter from the school outlining the impact of their absence in line with our attendance strategy. Please see further information on the school website by following this link:
Safeguarding Information
What if I have a Safeguarding Concern?
A reminder to parents and carers that if you have a safeguarding concern about a child this should be brought to Mrs Evans (Designated Safeguarding Lead) or Mrs Griffin (Deputy DSL).
There is lots of information on the school’s website to support parents in keeping their children safe (particularly linked to online safety) which can be found by clicking on the link below:
Road Safety Around Our School
We ask that parents and carers are considerate of the other members of both our school and local community when parking for drop off and collection. Please do not park on yellow lines or on the corners of local roads - markings have been placed on the road in spots where it will become dangerous if a vehicle stops. Parking in these places makes it very difficult for families to check that roads are safe for crossing and we are aware that this also applies to our Year 6 pupils who are walking home alone. Please leave time to find a suitable place to park safely and work with us to make the local roads as safe as possible for our pupils and families.
