Science Week - Year 5

In Year 5, we began the week by making Cartesian Divers. We learned about the Ancient Greek scientist Archimedes and put his discoveries into practice by making 'divers' from a drinking straw, rubber band and paper clips. These 'divers' floated at the top of a plastic bottle - until they were squeezed. At which point, the water from the bottle would fill the straw, forcing the air into a smaller space and making it denser. This causes the 'diver' to sink to the bottom of the bottle where it stays - until you loosen your grip on the bottle.

Later in the week, we will look at the work of the architect Zaha Hadid. Inspired by her amazing buildings, the children will complete the 'Spaghetti Tower' challenge, making free-standing towers from spaghetti and marshmallows.
