Music
Subject Intent
At St Paul's C of E Primary School, pupils gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, and musical genres. We provide our pupils with a variety of opportunities to perform, including: productions performed to the school, as part of musical ensembles, and at events within the local community. In Year 5, we also offer all pupils the opportunity to learn an instrument as a whole class group.
We aim to make our music lessons a space where pupils are free to experiment, with opportunities to build skills, such as careful listening, which can also be used to enhance their learning in other areas. We place an emphasis on our pupils developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music.
Through the organisation of our curriculum, we offer opportunities for our pupils to develop their ability to express their opinions, whilst respecting the opinions of others, and to understand the important role that music can play in any person’s life.
