Subject Intent

At St Paul's C of E Primary School, pupils gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, and musical genres. We provide our pupils with a variety of opportunities to perform, including: productions performed to the school, as part of musical ensembles, and at events within the local community, such as at The Rose Theatre or as part of the 'BIg Sing'. In Key Stage 2, we also offer all pupils the opportunity to learn to play the keyboard as a whole class group. We also offer the opportunity for pupils to have private music lessons, accessing individual tuition from the Kingston Music Service or group sessions led by iRock. 

We aim to make our music lessons a space where pupils are free to experiment, with opportunities to build skills, such as careful listening, which can also be used to enhance their learning in other areas. We place an emphasis on our pupils developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music.

Our curriculum is planned carefully with our pupils in mind; the music that we study is chosen to reflect a range of periods of history along with a diverse representation of cultures, with our own community at the heart of our decisions.  Opportunities are sought to offer enriching experiences, such as workshops with the Royal Opera House to give our pupils the chance to experience music that they may otherwise not be exposed to. 

Through the organisation of our curriculum, we offer opportunities for our pupils to develop their ability to express their opinions, whilst respecting the opinions of others, and to understand the important role that music can play in any person’s life.
