Subject Intent

At St Paul’s C of E Primary School, we aim to provide a high quality geography curriculum which will inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people for our pupils. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about places and people, resources in the environment, physical and human processes and formation and use of landscapes.

We also want pupils to develop geographical skills: collecting and analysing data, using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans, and communicating information in a variety of ways. Alongside this, we focus on pupils developing appropriate vocabulary in order to express their knowledge and opinions.

Our curriculum is planned carefully with our pupils in mind. We make use of our local area to complete fieldwork, such as traffic surveys, and local area walks to support devlopment of mapping skills. We have easy access to the River Thames and make use of this both in the local area and in other areas of London too which enables our pupils to further develop their understanding of the significance of the river and make links to other rivers around the world and their significance too. We take opportunities to tavel on public transport to teach our pupils not only how to use this safely, but to give them an underatdning of how easily many different places can be accessed to open up many rich experiences. We identify countries used for comparative work carfeully, and choose explorers to represent not only a range of periods of history but also a diverse variety of cutural backgrounds, considering our community when making these choices. 

We want our pupils to enjoy learning about geography by: gaining knowledge and skills which build over time; making links which enable them to put their learning into context; identifying how they can make a difference to the world around them  and allowing them to feel prepared for transition to secondary school.
